by Luke Santangelo

Who’s competing?

Male Boxers: Roscoe Hill (Spring, Texas), Jahmal Harvey (Oxon Hill, Md.), Omari Jones (Orlando, Fla.), Joshua Edwards (Houston, Texas)

Female Boxers: Jennifer Lozano (Laredo, Texas), Alyssa Mendoza (Caldwell, Idaho) and Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendale, Calif.), Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio)

Joshua Edwards (Houston, Texas), Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.), Jahmal Harvey (Oxon Hill, Md.), Jennifer Lozano (Laredo, Texas) and Morelle McCane (Cleveland, Ohio) were the first five Team USA boxers to punch their tickets to Paris. Omari Jones (Orlando, Florida), Roscoe Hill (Springs, Texas) and Alyssa Mendoza (Caldwell, Idaho) then followed suit and earned their Olympic spots during the 2024 World Qualification Tournaments.

On the male side, Roscoe Hill will represent Team USA in the flyweight division at 51kg. Hill is the oldest boxer on the current Olympic roster and will look to lead Team USA to its first male gold medal since Andre Ward in 2004.

Jahmal Harvey will box in the featherweight division (57 kg) and is one of Team USA’s most dominant and complete boxers on the roster. The Oxon Hill native was the first American male to win an elite world title since 2007. Harvey wrapped his 2023 schedule with two gold medals, including his Olympic ticket at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Omari Jones and Joshua Edwards round out Team USA’s roster of male boxers, bringing the men’s competitors to four. Jones boxes in the middleweight (71 kg) division, while Edwards occupies the Super Heavyweight (92+ kg) division for the stars and stripes. Both boxers have been consistent figures in the ring and earned two medals each throughout 2023.

As for Team USA’s female competitors, three of the four boxers at this year’s Olympic Games etched their names in history.

Jennifer Lozano made history as the first Olympian out of Laredo, Texas, after earning her Olympic spot in the flyweight division (50 kg) with a silver medal at the 2023 Pan American Games. Alyssa Mendoza became the first Olympic boxer to qualify for the Games from the state of Idaho and is the youngest competitor on the 2024 roster at just 20 years old. Mendoza consistently dominated in her first year of international competition and brought home a medal in three international events in 2023.

McCane also etched her name in the history books for her city of Cleveland, Ohio, and became the fifth consecutive boxer, and first female, from her city to qualify for an Olympic Games. McCane also stands out with an impressive resume in 2023, as she brought home a gold and two silvers in her three international tournaments during the year and will now represent her country in the 66 kg weight class.

Rounding out Team USA’s female roster is Jajaira Gonzalez in the Lightweight division (60 kg). Gonzalez earned her spot on the Olympic roster after securing a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games.
