From Chattanooga to Paris: Local boxing referee heads to the Olympics

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Harrison resident and retired Chattanooga Fire Captain Shawn Reese has been a boxing referee and judge for 24 years, 11 years internationally. Now, he has reached the pinnacle of success in the world of boxing: the Olympics.

Lupita Ruiz - Sport Boxing - Hometown - Garden Grove, Calif.

Lupita, a freshman at Santiago High, defeated Stockton’s Faith Gomez by unanimous 5-0 decision, winning the 114lbs.  junior female title at the 2024 USA Boxing National Championships in Richmond.  Named the Junior female outstanding boxer of the tournament, the 12-time national champion also won gold at the National Junior Olympic last June and has a career record of 40-0.

IOC recommends inclusion of boxing in Los Angeles 2028 Games

COSTA NAVARINO, Greece -- Boxing is set to be on the program for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles after years of disputes over how the sport is run.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said Monday that the IOC's executive board approved including boxing on the 2028 program.

It still needs a full IOC session to sign off on the decision later this week, but that's usually a formality.

Omari Jones scores TKO win in pro debut; Jamaine Ortiz wins decision

ORLANDO, Florida – When Matchroom Boxing signed 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Omari Jones to a professional contract, company president Eddie Hearn boasted, “I have no doubt that he is going to transfer that [amateur] success into a glittering career in the paid ranks.”


There is a long, long way to go, but the junior middleweight got that career off to a blistering start in front of a hugely enthusiastic hometown crowd at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday night, with a second-round stoppage of overmatched Italy's Alessio Mastronunzio.
