USA Boxing Recognizes Top 5 Officials of 2024
by Luke Santangelo
USA Boxing is thrilled to honor the hard-working officials who volunteer their time to help grow the sport of amateur boxing. These officials' main goal is to keep the sport of boxing safe and fair.
USA Boxing membership grows more and more each year, where there are now more than 65,000 members part of USA Boxing. The officials help all boxers from all over the country grow and compete in the sport that they love.
The main responsibility of a USA Boxing official is to make sure that the rules are enforced, the boxers are safe, and that every bout is contested fairly. USA Boxing officials are trained to control the action in the ring and to stop a bout, if necessary.
Additionally, a significant part of an official’s responsibility is scoring the bouts. USA Boxing uses the Ten-Point System to score each round. It is critical that officials score each round independently, based on their own observations and based off USA Boxing scoring criteria. A criterion that is fair judgement of the bout and relies on not just counting punches but considering the domination and control of the action throughout each round.
USA Boxing has three levels of officiating, with Level I being for the beginners and Level III for the advanced and more experienced officials. For officials to reach level III status they must maintain the following rules: (1) Be a registered member for at least 3 years and be currently registered (2) Have been a Level II official for a minimum of 2 years, (3) Officiated at Regional and/or National levels for a minimum of 2 years, (4) Active at LBC Competitions (as defined and published by the R/J Commission) and had satisfactory performance, (5) Attend a designated National Tournament to take the Level III exam and pass with 90% or better.
USA Boxing officials must also stay active in their LBC and pass a Level III exam at the National Tournaments every two years. Level III officials are required to judge a minimum number of 25 Bouts in a national tournament to be counted towards their rankings.
USA Boxing strives to give all officials a pathway and an opportunity to demonstrate that they have what it takes to be one of the best officials in the United States. Officials will be invited to USA Boxing tournaments based on their ranking, availability, and need of the Official in charge.
