CARDIFF, WALES – On Friday, July 30th, the British Amateur Boxing Association hosted “Great Britain vs. Rest of the World”. In the spirit of competition US National Team Members, Errol Spence (Desoto, TX) and Duran Caferro (Helena, MT) were invited by the British Amateur Boxing Association to battle Fred Evans and Tom Stalker from the Great Britain Boxing Team. This event took place at the Cardiff International Arena in front of a notable crowd of about 2,000. Great Britain finished even (5-5) with the Rest of the World which included boxers from Sweden, China, Ireland and the United States.
In the fifth bout of the evening at the 60kg/132lbs division Caferro took on Stalker, a left handed veteran who performed with a great deal of confidence. Although Caffero started a late rally it wasn’t enough to prevail and finished with a 16-7 decision in favor of Stalker.
2010 US National Welterweight Champion, Spence had the eighth bout of the evening against crowd favorite, Evans. Spence quickly quieted the hometown crowd as he took Evans to his knees in the first round for a mandatory eight count. The bout finished with a 15-9 decision in favor of Spence.
Following the event the US delegation was invited to attend the World Boxing Council’s Annual Night of Champions Awards Dinner in downtown Cardiff. The athletes were met with praise and respect from former World Champions Roberto Duran, James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith, George Chavalo and Shannon Briggs to name a few.
