COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2010 USA Boxing National Championship concluded with a bang as the best boxers in the country squared off in a center-stage atmosphere inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel ballroom.
In just the second bout of the afternoon there was an upset in the 119 lbs/featherweight division, Lauren Fisher (Indiana, Pa..), dec. Sacred Downing (Trenton, N.J.), 17-14. Downing, a multiple returning National Champion, said after her loss, “I’m a people’s champion, in life you’re going to fail sometimes. Today wasn’t my day.”
Cashmere Jackson (Cleveland, Ohio) and Vanessa Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) faced off in the ‘Jackson’s battle for Ohio’. “I have a lot of respect for (Vanessa Jackson),” said Cashmere after clenching the gold in the 141 lbs/welterweight division.
“I am happy with the win. I lost to her (Liz Leddy – Portland, Maine) before at Regionals. I’m in better shape and worked on my movement,” said 125 lbs/lightweight champion, Jody Ann Weller (Pamona, N.Y.).
Colorado native and hometown hero, 108 lbs/light flyweight, Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.) dec. Diego Hurtado (Sparks, Nev.), 31-15.
In an exciting match up 114 lbs/flyweight division, two-time Olympian Rau’shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), stopped Miguel Cartegena (Philadelphia, Pa.), RET-2 (1:40). “I’m back now. I’m number one -- now I have to stay No. 1. I feel relief because last year I lost in the semi-finals,” said Warren.
After going to paper scoring in the first round, 152 lbs/welterweight, Errol Spence (Desoto, Texas), dec. Alex Martin, (Chicago, Ill.), 4-1. Spence’s comments on his win, “It feels better the second time around because everyone is watching you and knows you.”
In a very close match up, 165 lbs/middleweight, Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.) dec. Jesse Hart (Marquette, Mich.), 9-8 after a level 1 tie-breaker.
In yet another great boxing exhibition, 178 lbs/light heavyweight, Jeffrey Spencer (Fort Carson, Colo.), dec. Robert Brant (Oakdale, Minn.), 10-9. “This is my biggest win and my teammates were here to support me,” said Spencer after beating defending 2009 champion, Brant.
