(CINCINNATI, OHIO) - The future of United States Olympic-style boxing was on full display on Tuesday night as the 2010 Under-19 National Championships opened competition at the Hyatt Regency in Cincinnati.
Eight bouts of action highlighted the night's festivities with bouts in the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions. Following an opening bout walkover, lightweights Ace'son Leseure (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Gregory Young, Jr. (Pewlben, Ariz.) faced off in the first contested bout of the tournament. Leseure took control early in the bout, claiming a 7-2 lead and giving Young standing eight counts in each of the first two rounds. While the bout stayed competitive throughout, Leseure built on his lead over the final six minutes to claim a 21-11 final victory.
Lightweight action continued in the third bout of the session with Arthur Porter (Monroe, Mich.) battling Ryan Martin (Chattanooga, Tenn.). The first round began slowly, but Martin picked it up in the latter part of the round to claim a 3-0 lead after one. Yet the bout saw a momentum shift in the second with Porter holding Martin scoreless and pulling the bout to a 3-2 score with one round remaining. Martin emerged from the corner on a mission in the third, giving Porter a standing eight count and looking to land throughout the round. Despite having a point taken for holding late in the bout, Martin went on to win the 10-7 final decision. Martin and Leseure will face off in Thursday's semifinal action for a spot in the championship bout.
Antonio Capulin (Houston, Texas) and Christian Camacho (Orlando, Fla.) boxed in the first tiebreaker of the event in a highly entertaining and competitive contest. Capulin held a slim one point lead after each of the first two rounds. Both boxers let their hands fly in the third in an attempt to pull out the victory and at the end of three rounds, the two boxers were deadlocked at five. Yet there could only be one winner and Capulin claimed the victory on his 11-10 total punch count edge.
In the final lightweight bout lightweight bout of the evening, Xavier Montelongo, Jr. (E. Los Angeles, Calif.) faced off with Divante Jones (Hephzibah, Ga.) for the final spot in the semifinals. Montelongo grabbed control early in the bout, moving out to a 3-1 edge after one. He more than doubled his advantage in the second stanza of competition, enjoying an 8-3 lead as the final round began. The pace slowed considerably in the final round, but Montelongo held on to win a 9-4 final decision. Montelongo and Capulin will battle in semifinal round competition on Thursday.
The final three bouts of the opening session were contested in the welterweight division and a bout between Altanez Fox (Foresville, Md.) and Jerry Tristan (Katy, Texas) opened the 152 pound action. Fox dictated the pace from the opening bell, holding Tristan scoreless to claim a 5-0 advantage after three rounds of boxing. He continued his strong output in the final two rounds, moving out to a 14-3 final decision victory over Tristan. Fox will take on Cincinnati's Quashwan Toler in semifinal competition on Thursday.
Moshea Aleem (Richmond, Va.) put on a show his preliminary round match-up with David Lightfoot (Zanesville, Ohio). Following a slow first round, Aleem turned up the heat in the second, giving Lightfoot a standing eight count en route to 12-4 lead. He continued pouring on the points in the final round, even sending Lightfoot to the canvas, before claiming the 21-6 final decision.
Xavier DeLuca (Fort Morgan, Colo.) and Jake Maier (Pittsburgh, Pa.) closed the opening day of competition with a welterweight preliminary contest. The final bout was closely contested from start to finish with Maier claiming a slim one-point lead after the first round. DeLuca closed the deficit in the second round to move the bout to a 13-13 tie with three minutes of boxing remaining. Maier regained his lead in the final round to win a 16-14 final victory and move on to semifinal action where he will face Aleem.
Under-19 National Championships action will resume on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. EST with nine bouts of action on the schedule.
