The 2009 USA Boxing National Championships to be Contested in Denver, June 8-13, 2009
Julie Goldsticker February 13, 2009
Preliminary action will take place June 8-10, with junior division finals and men's semifinals on June 11, women's finals being contested on June 12, and the event concluding with men's championship action on June 13. The event will move out of the Colorado Springs area for the first time since 2003, and will remain in Denver for the 2010 edition with assistance from a grant from the Denver-based Daniels Fund.
As the first USA Boxing national championship event following the 2008 Olympics, the tournament will showcase many of the boxers hoping to compete for an Olympic berth in 2012. Local and regional competitions are currently taking place across the nation and will run through late May to determine the boxers taking part in the event.
Three of the gold medal winners from the 2005 national championships, Rau'shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), Gary Russell, Jr. (Capitol Heights, Md.), and Demetrius Andrade (Providence, R.I.) went on to earn berths on the 2008 Olympic team. In addition, seven members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team were former USA Boxing National Championships winners.
Tickets for the 2009 USA Boxing National Championships will go on sale in April, and additional ticket information will be released as it as available. The U.S. Boxing Championships have been held annually since 1888, making it the longest running boxing tournament in the United States. Former champions include Pernell Whitaker, Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and Muhammad Ali (as Cassius Clay).
