Athlete's Area - AAC

February 7, 2011

Dear Regional Director, LBC presidents, and USA Boxing athletes,

The USAB Athlete Advisory Council (AAC) is the athlete voice of USA Boxing, which comprises 20% voting representation on matters of governance within USAB.  The AAC consists of one athlete representative of each geographic region in the United States in addition to the AAC Leadership consisting of three Athlete Board of Director members and one USOC AAC alternate. These members will make up the Athlete Advisory Council (AAC), which will comprise of the 20% athlete voting members for the annual National Meeting and the voting members for AAC Leadership positions.

We are requesting that odd numbered regions (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) hold elections for their athlete regional AAC representative and alternate at their upcoming regional tournament. These athletes will serve a two-year term.  In addition to the odd numbered regions, we also ask that the following regions:

SOUTHEAST (4), NORTH MIDWEST (6), WYOMONDAK (10), PACIFIC NORTHWEST (12)

also hold elections as they did not hold elections as required last year.  Those athletes will serve an initial one year term so that the AAC turnover is staggered.  Regions 2 and 8 will not have to hold their athlete elections until 2012 as they held their elections last year.

All elected regional athlete representatives and alternates must meet the defined requirements and should be elected at the Regional Tournament, to serve on the Athlete Advisory Council.  To make sure all the regional tournaments have completed, the term of service will begin August 1, 2011.  After this year, all even numbered regions will hold their elections on even numbered years (2012, 2014, 2016) and odd numbered regions will hold their athlete elections on odd numbered years at their regional tournaments (2013, 2015, 2017).

Each Regional Director and current athlete representative if applicable, will be responsible for coordinating their athlete elections at their Regional Tournament, with the stipulation that only athletes can vote for athletes, and the athlete candidates must fulfill the stated requirements to run for the position.  Please see attached list of requirements.  Athletes represented in regions that aren’t geographic in nature (military, Golden Gloves, PAL’s, etc.) will be eligible to run in the region they are geographically located. The regional representative elected will serve on the AAC and will be the voice of athletes within the USAB on all issues pertaining to athletes.

We are looking for athletes that have the ability to:

  • work well within the USAB organization
  • to think critically about issues
  • to communicate and advocate effectively for athletes
  • to dedicate the necessary time, which will be essential in serving USAB athletes.

The Regional AAC representatives or their alternates will be required to attend an Annual Meeting once a year as well as participate in monthly AAC conference call meetings.  The Regional AAC Representatives or alternates will be provided travel and lodging to attend Annual Meeting, date and time to be announced as soon as we know the date for 2011.

Any athlete that fulfills the stated requirements and wants to serve, are encouraged to contact their Regional Director as soon as possible to announce their interest in the Regional Representative AAC position.  I have included contact information of all Regional Directors.  After the election, Regional Directors must return the attached completed athlete representative form to Lynette Smith at the National Office no later than fourteen (14) days after their regional competition for confirmation of athlete qualifications.  Thank you for your help in giving athletes in all regions a voice in USA Boxing.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 914-490-6938 or e-mail me at angelbovee@hotmail.com.
