Women's Golden Gloves Champions

by Christy Halbert / April 16, 2009

There are three National championships by which female boxers earn ranking points in the United States:  US Championships, National PAL, and Women's National Golden Gloves.

The long tradition of the Golden Gloves organization in the United States makes the annual Women's National Golden Gloves tournament an important part of the development of girls' and women's boxing.  The Golden Gloves organization opened its doors to women in 1999 with the first women's championship taking place in Augusta, Georgia.

A list of all champions of Women's National Golden Gloves, by year and weight division, can be found on the USA Boxing website at  http://usaboxing.org/content/index/2677

The National Golden Gloves organization allows open registration for US boxers to enter the women's national tournament.  Some of the best present-day professional prizefighters, and even current and former professional world champions, were once National Golden Gloves champions, including Jill Emery, Carina Moreno, Ann-Marie Saccurato and Yvonne Reis, just to name a few.

For the past several years, the annual tournament has been organized by Bonnie Canino in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  Bonnie is a decorated professional prizefighter and kickboxer.  The dates for the 2009 Women's National Golden Gloves have been announced as July 8-11.

There are four age divisions in the 2009 tournament:
Juniors -- ages 13-14
Seniors -- ages 15-16
Elite & Novice -- ages 17-34
Master -- ages 35+
