Luis Arias USA Boxing

A Fresh Start

by Julie Goldsticker / October 14, 2008

My name is Luis Arias. I am a 2006 Junior Olympic national champion, 2006 Cadet World Championships silver medalist, 2008 U.S National Champion, and on the Under 19 team heading to Mexico for the Youth World Championships. Basically, I am aware of the whole USA Boxing program, and I've seen a lot. I was a training partner for the 2008 Olympic Games, and I am also aware of the Olympic program and all the training. I've been in and out of several camps since I was 15.

With the 2008 Olympic boxing team only bringing back a bronze medal from our heavyweight Deontay Wilder, the program was not looking very good. Many critics have said what they have to say about the program, but as soon as I walked in I noticed a change. The whole program is on the verge of changing for the better. The coaching staff as well as USA Boxing itself are planning to leave a mark of change with the U-19 team. The staff is inspired to take not only this team, but our country back to the very top. The U.S boxing program should be back with elite athletes, and we are all going to be ready to show this good change at the Worlds. I just want everyone to know that from day one of this camp for the Worlds, which I can already tell the major differences occurring with the boxing program. Hopefully, this change is the reason why this team brings back a handful of medals!
