COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Boxing named Angel Bovee (White Plains, N.Y.) and Boyd Melson (Fort Carson, Colo.) as the two athlete representatives on its new Board of Directors on Thursday. Bovee and Melson complete a 10-member board, which took office today at the USA Boxing Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Bovee and Melson were selected by USA Boxing’s nine-member Athlete Advisory Council (AAC) on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh. It is the first Board of Directors position for both athletes. Melson previously served as a regional athlete representative in addition to working as a member of the international committee.
Bovee has been boxing for six years and was a member of the first-ever women’s world championships team. An outstanding advocate for women’s boxing, Bovee works as a personal trainer and freelance producer/director and trains at the New York Boxing Gym.
Melson is a member of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program and the 2004 World Military Champion. He was a 2003 West Point graduate, is currently a Captain in the United States Army and recently completed his MBA in Human Resource Management at Touro University in Glendale, Calif. Both Bovee and Melson won silver medals at the 2006 U.S. Championships and Melson is currently training in the hopes of making the 2008 Olympic team.
The newly created Athlete Advisory Council consists of previous Board of Directors member and 2006 National Golden Gloves champion Aaron Alafa (Visalia, Calif.); former regional athlete representative Lily Aveytan (Pasadena, Calif.); Bovee; Season One Contender champion Sergio Mora (Los Angeles, Calif.); Melson; 2005 National Champion William Rosinsky (Richmond Hills, N.Y.); Lucas Runion (College Park, Md.); and Walter Sarnoi (Monterey Park, Calif.).
Bovee and Melson join Jim Beasley (Hutchinson, Kan.); Robert Blaha (Colorado Springs, Colo.); Thomas Coulter (Syracuse, N.Y.); Kevin Franklin (McDonough, Ga.); Andy Geiger (Port Angeles, Wash.); Alan Rothenberg (Los Angeles, Calif.); David Swavey (Wylie, Texas) and Dr. Thomas Virgets (Annapolis, Md.) as USA Boxing Board of Directors members.
Bovee will serve a four-year term as chairwoman of USA Boxing’s Athlete Advisory Council and Board of Directors member. Melson will serve a two-year term on the USA Boxing Board of Directors and alternate to the United States Olympic Committee’s AAC.
